IRVINE'S SHIPBUILDING & DRY DOCKS Co. Ltd. (1898-1930)
WEST HARTLEPOOL
Robert Irvine, a Master Mariner of Glaswegian descent, came ashore from employment with the West Hartlepool S.N. Company in 1860 to start a ship repair business, going into partnership in 1864 with Alexander Currie, a manager with shipbuilders Pile, Spence in order to start their own shipbuilding company. After only two years, Currie departed leaving Irvine in control. From 1898 the company was renamed after passing into control of the Furness family, absorbing their own Furness, Withy business before the family sold their shares in 1919. The yard became one of the many to fall victim to the recession of the 1920's.
