RAKE, KIMBER & Company

MIDDLESBROUGH

The yard was established in 1858 on a site where the Transporter Bridge now stands, but operated only in that year, producing four vessels (two named below). The yard was bought by Richardson, Duck & Company, shipbuilders of Thornaby in 1859 and put under the management of Raylton Dixon, a Newcastle man, producing several vessels sub-contracted from the Thornaby yard until bought out by Backhouse and Dixon in 1862 (see separate list).

Additional information welcome.

It is believed that prior to the launch of the vessels listed below, two ships were built in knock down form for assembly elsewhere.

Vessels built by Rake, Kimber under sub-contract from Richardson, Duck will be included in the list for the latter yard, identified where possible.
