spotted off Wilmington, N. Carolina, by USS STARS AND
STRIPES and USS CAMBRIDGE. She ran for Wilmington while
under fire but ran aground and the crew abandoned ship.
Some of the cargo of arms and ammunition was recovered by
the 'rebels'. (However she was still listed in LR1865!) (In 1962 a storm uncovered the wreck, and later divers recovered rifles, shells etc. It was planned they were to be displayed in the North Carolina Museum after restoration.) |
