Fate 05/12/1942 Lost by fire and explosion at Lagos.

BENGALI & sister SPANIARD (y.n.1021) were re-fitting at Lagos, when another sister KELT (y.n.1020) escorted the tanker ATHELVICTOR into the port from Takoradi, and berthed nearby. ATHELVICTOR discharged high octane petrol at the Shell wharf but spilled 20000 gallons into the harbour. The petrol caught fire and BENGALI, SPANIARD & the naval trawler CANNA eventually blew up. The explosion put out the fire on KELT but blew the bow off. She was subsequently salvaged. At least 68 people were lost, but this excludes the local workers.
